To date the arrest total for these riots are well into the thousands, with trials still being held from 9 o'clock in the morning, till 8 in the evening, in an attempt to get through the shear volume of people who have been caught and arrested.
What happened on Saturday the 6th and the events that followed, has definatly shown the world, the worst of the british people, however luckily it has also shown some of the good. At this moment the only good that I can seem to take from these riots, are the amazing people who the day after riots occurred, went out onto the streets, to volunteer their time to help clean up, and make sure people were alright.
The main reason these events were such a travesty was because there wasn't any reason for them. I know the very first riot happened because of the shooting of a man by police. This caused the riot as many believed the man was unarmed and innocent and so unfairly injured, however it was then discovered that the man actually had a gun on him, and allegedly try to fire on the police. I in no way condone what the people did, but with the first riot I can see that there was at least a reason why they went out and rioted. With all of the other riots however, especially any not in London, there really wasn't a reason, people were just going out wrecking things and looting because they could.
The result of these riots for England, as looked upon by outside country's, especially as we're hosting the Olympics next year, is that british people are basically trouble makers, and cause havoc and damage. Because of these small groups of people, our reputation as a people has been completely smeared.
Within Britain, the result of these riots is clear, large areas of our country are now burnt, smashed in, damaged, and looted.... Why would you destroy the place where you live, and the community that your apart of? How does that make sense? To the rioters, I'd just like to say, 'they're your shops, and pubs, and clubs, and supermarkets, and post office's', now you don't have them, with no one else to blame but yourself.
Further more, the one thing that has annoyed me even more about these riots, is the reputation of young people, or as we're now more commonly known as 'youths'. Okay there were young people in those riots, and some didn't have jobs, but there were also loads of older people or 'adults', who were making lots of money, with no need to steal a dvd player, but they did anyway. Just as the reputation of young was starting to turn around, its been damaged again, and again only because of a small group of people.
I really hope that no one else has been hurt since last week, and they've managed to catch more of the rioters. As for what happens next, we'll just have to see how everything turns out over the coming weeks.
