Over the last couple of months I've found myself regularly tuning in every week to watch certain programmes on tv. I haven't really done this for a few years now, instead I've been catching up on programmes that I somehow missed when they first came out, buying up seasons worth of dvds, or using things like netflix that have a whole backlog of episodes.
There are a few problems that I've recently rediscovered about this way of watching tv programs, the two main ones being the feeling of anticipation between each weeks episode and the large amounts of time between each season.
By watching old programs that have been out for years, and that often have even finished, I've been able to watch one episode straight after another at the speed that suited me. If there was a cliffhanger at the end of an episode I could move straight onto the next one or go out and buy the next season. By going back to watching current programmes though, I'm once again at the mercy of the tv channels and programme creators.
What always confuses me, when it comes to tv programmes, is the difference between american shows and british shows. Most american series as standard have about 24 episodes and there's usually about 6 months between the end of one series and the start of the next. With british series however your lucky if there's 12 episodes in a season and often it can be over a year before the new season is aired. I get that there are more programme creators in the US and more money is put into them over there, however I just don't see why we can't pick up a trick or two to speed up the way our programmes are made.
You can probably guess from this curious/rant type blog that one of the programmes I've been watching has now finished and I have to go back to waiting for it to start again. There isn't really much I can do though I guess, I'll just have to wait, why are these programmes so good.
