The Great Gatsby

The other day I finished reading the book 'The Great Gatsby', and even though I do think its a great book, something about it has been nagging me for the past few days. For people who haven't yet read this book, I'm going to try make this blog as spoiler free as possible so I don't ruin anything.

I finally managed today to figure out just what it was that felt different in this book, and that was the ending. I'm going to try explain this as best I can without spoilers but hopefully it'll make sense.
The reason that this particular ending felt so different was because it seemed so real, not just another fairy tale ending. Now you may be thinking 'why does that make this book so different? Many others feel real.' Well perhaps, however when I thought back over past books I've read, there weren't very many at all that I could think of that ended in such a realistic way, a way that you didn't want it to end in, but when you think about it actually seemed like the most plausible way to end.

Saying all of this, I actually found this characteristic of the book to be very refreshing, and was actually what made me enjoy the book even more. I do often like reading about how the main characters at the end of a book either get what they set out for or pull something seemingly impossible out of the hat last minute. However its also sooo refreshing to read a book that feels realistic and feels as though it has happened, and doesn't just take that 'way out' of going for the happy ending.

I'll be honest and say that before reading The Great Gatsby, I'd never really heard much about it, or what the story was about. Now having finished it though I think that it really is a brilliant book, and I'm glad I picked it up. Studying history and it being something I love, I'm also kind of a sucker for books set in historical periods, the roaring american twenties especially, making this book even more appealing to me.
Although at times I did have to concentrate a little harder to decipher some of the older terms used, to make sure I understood what was being said, there isn't anything else negative I can really say.

I can definitely see why this is such a classic book. All I'll say about this book, to conclude, is that if you haven't yet read it you should, and that this book is amazing and has definitely gained a permanent place on my bookshelf from now on.
