Events from last week

Normal non-nerdy blog day today! Try saying that quickly, I did, bit of a tongue twister. Anyways there were a few things that happened last week that I wanted to talk about, but didn't manage to fit in anywhere, so I thought I'd recap them all today. As its me, and I like things neat and organised, I thought I'd do this in order, so.....

Tuesday - This was the inevitable day when my mum received her new HTC Desire Z phone, as her old phone contract is about to run out. Now I don't mean it in a bad way but whenever there are new gadgets such as mp3 players, games consoles, laptops, etc... I am usually called upon to help figure them out and show members of my family how they work, Tuesday was no expectation. When it comes to electronics, I'd say that I'm fairly adaptive, and I'm able to pick things up quite quickly, however in the case of my family, the majority of them aren't. Having heard about these phones but not used one before, it came as quite a surprise to me when we charged it up, turned it on, and then flicked through to the main menu. This phones main menu was full of shortcuts, apps, directories, folders, everything packed into this one main menu, we then later found out that in addition to this, anything you downloaded from the android app market would then have its own shortcut added to the main menu, making even more app shortcuts appear. This HTC Windows phone really is like a mini computer.

Towards the end of last year I got myself a Blackberry Curve 3G 9300, which now I don't think I could live without, I use my phone for everything from checking Twitter on a very regular basis, to listening to music, to tracking how far I jog, to uploading these blogs by e-mail. Having gotten so used to my Blackberry, this HTC phone shocked me because there are so many duplicated features on the phone. An example of this is that there are two contact lists, one under the name of 'people' and one under 'search people', now you'd think Jack one of them is for searching your contacts, but oh no, you can search in the 'people' list, the main difference we could see was that one had sync'd in all your social network contacts and tried to merge them with the original contacts. Not quite sure how to explain it in a less complicated way, trust me took me a while to get my head round it at first. To summarise, this brilliant feature of your phone syncing social network contacts, actually left you with duplicate numbers, duplicate names, contacts with incorrect information, and tuned out to be a waste of time.

I know so far I've only seemed to mention bad things about this phone, because truthfully I think there were quite a few, and in all honesty they could strip away half of the features on the phone and it would actually improve it, however there were some good features of this phone. As I havent had chance to use an android phone up till now, I was really impressed by how many apps they had in their market, specifically the apps that were orginally made for the Ipods and Iphones, such as Angry Birds, Tap Tap, and other touch screen applications. Overall, I might be slightly biased when saying this, but I still think that the Blackberry 'as a phone' beats this new HTC model hands down. The Blackberry seems just to be made more for the, on the move usage, hence 'mobile', where as with the HTC phone, I feel like you should be sitting down somewhere, and having to concentrate on what your doing. Anyways it was quite fun having a look through the new phone, nothing beats flicking through a new gadget, and we did end up deciphering most of the phone after a couple of days, so it should hopefully all be working now.

Wednesday - Don't want to say too much about it, but Orienteering didn't go down exactly as we'd hoped. I think we thought that on wednesday we'd be able to turn up after a year, and all we'd be is in slightly less shape but still fine, however to cut a long story short, it was boiling, its hay fever season, our courses were longer because for the first time we had to do the adult course and so I ended up kicking my Asthma back up, and Matty although he still did well, didnt get as many as I think he wanted too. Not giving up though, were missing out this weeks event, due to us both being at work, but were off to the event the following week to see how we get on then.

Thursday - On thursday evening, my brother and me went to an event that I'd been looking forward to for a while, which was a James Bond themed night held at the Grand Hotel, hosted by Matty and other members of his course at college. For an occasion such as this my brother and me both got dressed up in suits, smart shoes the whole malarky, which I do have to tell you, feels very weird walking round the streets of Scarborough in, at about 8 o'clock on a thursday evening, with the sun still out. The evening seemed to be a hugh success, everyone really enjoyed themselves, and as an added bonus they managed to raise alot of money for the childrens ward at the local hospital. I do have to say, congradulations to Matty and his friends, for doing such a good job, especially seeing as how they were on a limited budget, but managed to convice the hotel to give them the massive ballroom for free, and getting local business's to donate loads of free raffle prizes for the event.

This occasion also gave me the chance to catch up with some old friends from college that I hadn't seen in a while, and also an old teacher from college who I'd not seen in a while called Mr Sharples, who I got to have a long chat with, because he was there doing the photography, again donating his time for free to help in raising money. The only thing I would say that was slightly suspicious that evening was how, when it came it picking the winning raffle tickets, Matty coincidently had three out of about twelve of the winning tickets, hmm.......must just be coincidence.

Weekend - For my family the weekend consisted mainly of watching films like Home Alone 1, 2,  and Die Hard 4.0 and t.v programmes, such as Eurovision, Doctor Who, Britains got Talent, and others all on over these two days. Was quite a nice relaxing weekend in the end.
Just have to add quickly, I havent yet had chance to write up my review of the latest Doctor Who episode, I will get round to it in the next few days, although it was amazing, if you havent yet watched it, go watch it now, the series just keeps getting better.
