The Olympic Opening Ceremony

Up until this point I've chosen not to write about the Olympics, mainly to see how others would react, but also to give myself time to decide what my opinions on it were.

Within the last week I have heard a variety of opinions on the opening ceremony calling it everything from the worst in history, to the best there has ever been. One of the biggest criticism that came out was about other countries not being able to understand certain aspects of the display. I do understand to a degree what these critics mean, however they don't seem to understand that it would be impossible to create a show solely of elements that every country in the world would recognise. Furthermore the opening ceremony was Great Britain's ceremony, its main role was to show off our culture and history, to entertain and educate other countries, not to simply put on a show that would please people for two hours.

I will be honest and say that I did think the ceremony was outstanding, absolutely amazing, however it was not as I had originally imagined it. From what I'd heard of the ceremony prior to last friday, I thought that the ceremony would have had more fictional elements to it, more film like scenes and choreography, due to Danny Boyle's involvement.
With regards to that, the main thing I wanted to bring up was about how much the opening ceremony looked like a scene out of Lord Of The Rings. I'm pretty sure that this wasn't the intended outcome, however i did enjoy it more because of this. Felt that an early trailer for the Hobbit during the first few minutes. Did anyone else see the comparisons to LOTR...the shire, the ring??
