Its been a while now since I gave my thoughts on something that's happened in the news, and with some of the things coming out this week, I thought now would be a good time to get back into writing down these thoughts.
I'm sure by now that everyone has heard of the news from earlier on this week, that Margaret Thatcher died after having a stroke. Since then however there has been so much controversy over this event that I wanted to have my say too. Before I say anything, because I now how controversial this topic has become, I just thought I'd say that all views expressed in this blog are my personal opinions, not saying anyone is right or wrong, just how I see the situation.
I think the best place to start is from what I know about Thatcher's history and time in office. Having done history at A-level, we did for a short time go over the period when Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, and if I'm being honest I didn't really see what all the fuss was about. I know there were incidents that negatively affected certain groups of people, but there was also instances were groups of people significantly benefited from her being PM. This being said, brings me on to the first thing I'd like to go over, and that is does any one of the supposedly bad things she did, warrant all of the comments and remarks that have been made. I've heard people saying not only that they're glad that she died, but have gone as far to say that they wanted to see her body to make sure that she was 100% dead. Okay she may have done some bad things, but this is a human being were talking about, even if you are one of the people directly effected by something she did, do friends or family of hers deserve to hear thousands of people saying all of this. I'm not saying you can't be glad if that's what you want, but to display it in such a public way.
Listening to the news not too long ago, I even discovered that people have been buying on iTunes the old song 'Ding Dong the Witch is dead' from The Wizard of Oz, in an attempt to make a public statement.
The next thing I wanted to talk about is that large numbers of young teenagers/adults, people who were very young, or weren't even born when Margaret Thatcher was PM, have also been rejoicing in the fact that she has died. Now this hasn't only just annoyed me, I've even seen instances where people who were actually affected and didn't like her, have been getting annoyed because these people just seem to be jumping on the bandwagon and don't seem to have any reasoning behind saying this terrible things. These kinds of people have also been partaking in things such as buying that song on iTunes, increasing the publicity making bigger news out of something that shouldn't be.
I do get that there are people out there that would argue quite strongly that they have every right to be glad that someone has died, and I'd say that depending on their reasons why, they probably do. Its just all of the idiots jumping on to the band wagon that really get to me. there will always be those kind of people though who just like to troll and cause more problems. If I could just end by saying one last thing, it's that people should at least try and be respectful, try to be the bigger person, even if its only in public, and in whatever instance strokes aren't a laughing matter.
