Having been back to visit my family several times now, I've had a few chances to wander around this 'city', to get to know where things are, and to see what it has to offer as a new place to live.
With this in mind I thought I'd just quickly note down a few observations that I have had about this place.
The first and weirdly the most obvious thing that stuck out to me about Letchworth, is that they have a Blockbusters here. Now its not just your average small time Blockbusters, but the several shop length, filled to the brim Blockbusters that I thought didn't exist anymore. With things like Netflix and lovefilm offering really cheap and convenient methods of getting films, I didn't know places still had these big video rental stores.
I haven't yet decided what this piece of information says about Letchworth but it was nice to see that stores like this haven't yet, all gone extinct.
The next thing that I've found is that Letchworth has a very popular and quite big independent bookshop in the main high street. Along with selling new books it also sells large amounts of second hand books, CD's, vinyl records and other media types.
Having this shop is both a really good thing and a really bad thing. Good because I have somewhere local, basically five minutes walk away where I can go pick up loads of new and old books to add to my ever growing collection. The bad aspect is that I now have somewhere, within five minutes walk where I'll be tempted to go and spend loads, buying books to add to my ever growing collection. I haven't yet had a good chance to go in and have a good look round, something tells me though that there's no rush to do this, it'll still be there when I actually have money to spend.
The last thing that I've noticed about Letchworth is its Garden City aspect. Due to the reputation and status of the city, all of the grassy areas and walkways are always really well looked after, decorated with flowers, with cut grass and nicely planted trees. The main reason this aspect caught my eye is because the layout and decoration of Letchworth Garden City looks almost exactly like that of the city not too far away called Welwyn Garden City. The first time I came to Letchworth I honestly thought I'd somehow turned up in Welwyn instead.
Again this observation isn't really good or bad its just something I noticed about the place.
Overall, even though I'll be at university again after the summer, Letchworth will be an alright place for my family to settle in after all that time in Scarborough.
