Earlier on i was stood in the kitchen doing the washing up, and like most times I'm at home doing chores and such I had some music playing in the background.
After a few minutes a really good song came on that i like, and so as i always do, i started whistling along. Some people in these instances like to sing along to music, some like to hum, some dance, some do nothing, and I whistle. It was at this point though that I got thinking, do people not whistle anymore?
I have been racking my brain for hours now and apart from hearing people whistling at concerts or occasionally in a t.v programme, I cannot remember the last time I heard someone whistle in real life.
Your probably thinking, 'yes OK this is a good observation, but what's it got to do with anything?' Well when I was younger I learnt about this thing that people could do, that you had to learn to be able to do, something that not everyone out there can do, and I set out to learn how to do it, and I did. That thing just to remind you being whistling. It was something I felt very proud about having learnt to do, its one of the oldest skills I can remember ever having. Even today I rank it highly amongst the 'things I can do/skills I have learnt' along with several others like juggling.
Even though in my mind this is an amazing fun skill to have, I do remember the many occasions I was told to stop doing it as it was either; to loud, to annoying, or gave people headache's. So I do realise that for others this can actually be seen as a waste of time to learn how to do. It is due to this and partially due to just how the world is now and how it has developed that it feels as though this could be one of those things that is just slowly and quietly forgotten.
I do hope it isn't as I still believe its a nice thing to have, and to be able to do, its just one of those nice little pleasures in life. If it does unfortunately go the way of the dodo however, then at least I can say that I have learnt that skill and have used it almost everyday since.
