So...it was valentines day yesterday, and unsurprisingly not much happened with regards to my day personally, the internet was a buzz with what seemed to be this silent war however, between the happy loved up people all for valentines day and the people slightly less happy, perhaps single people who aren't so keen on valentines day.
Although individual people were making themselves heard pretty clearly, on things like Facebook, Reddit or the comment section of YouTube, what I thought was funny were the companies who were getting involved and choosing sides in this war. I say this was funny because you do get certain people saying its just one big commercial thing to get people to buy valentines cards and gifts and stuff, and here are some companies being smart taking advantage of the anti-valentines people. Dating websites must have been having a field day yesterday.
This little war did get me thinking though, you know me always mulling over the big important subjects in life. When it comes to Valentines day there are only really two different kinds of people: those who get it, and those who don't, and by 'it' I mean the meaning of the day. The people who get it, whether they are in a relationship or single and regardless of commercialism, get that it is a day dedicated to doing something a bit special and expressing how you feel.
The people who don't get it, again whether single or not, tend to feel it's some kind of pressure, like they are being forced by some big corporations to give loved ones gifts or such, and rebel in some way against that.
An argument that gets thrown around a lot is that you shouldn't need a specific day to express how you feel or do something special for someone, and because you've said that makes you a person that doesn't get it, and your sort of right but stuff sometimes gets in the way, people are busy, life happens, so its nice to have a day put aside for that sole purpose.
What I find slightly ironic, is that in my experience, you find that more of the people in the group who don't get it, are people in relationships.
Well all in all I had quite a nice day yesterday, coming off of a really productive day on Thursday which is always good. Hopefully everyone else out there had a nice day too.
