Applying for jobs

Although I have spent time applying for jobs before, its usually been looking for vacancies in shop windows or hearing from friends that they know somewhere that hiring. Now that I'm looking for a proper full time career starting job, searching seems to have gotten incredibly harder, not helped by the fact that we now live down south close to London, where the job market is very competitive.
In my epic quest so far, the biggest problem I  face, which is strangely basic and simple, is finding the correct key words to search to display the relevant jobs I'm looking for. I never really saw this as being a problem to begin with because you'd think if you wanted to search for teaching jobs you'd just search teacher etc...however this doesn't always work.
I don't know if its always been the case but people seem to receive very grandeur sounding job titles like cash machine operative, instead of cashier and so these titles throw off my searches.
Luckily I have been able to apply for quite a few jobs, its just receaching that point now when I have to wait for the deadlines to run out and the companies start to make their decisions. Having only heard back from two  companies so far out of the few dozen I've applied for, I'm hopeful that I'll hear back from some of the others soon. Let's just hope its good news.
If anyone else happens to read this and is also currently in this process of job hunting, I'd love to get some tips on things like where  your looking for vacancies, or decent recruitment agencies etc...
